Dear Maya,
Tonight: Maya and the kitten who loved bedtime
Maya's kitten Pebble has decided that bedtime is her very favorite time of day — and tonight, she wants to show Maya exactly why.
- 1.Pebble curls up on Maya's pillow, purring like a tiny, happy engine.
- 2.Maya and Pebble watch the moon peek through the window together.
- 3.Pebble whispers a sleepy thank-you to Maya for being the best friend ever.
- “What's your favorite part of bedtime, Maya?”
- “If Pebble could say one nice thing to you tonight, what would it be?”
Maya brushed her teeth, hopped into bed, and patted the soft spot on her pillow. In a flash, her little grey kitten Pebble came bounding into the room, ears up, tail high, eyes shining.
"There you are, Pebble!" Maya laughed. Pebble bonked her warm head against Maya's hand, the way she always did, and began to purr — a steady, happy rumble that sounded a little like a tiny engine getting ready for a long, cozy trip.
Pebble had decided, that very morning, that bedtime was her favorite time of the whole day. Mornings were for breakfast. Afternoons were for chasing sunny squares on the kitchen floor. But bedtime — bedtime was for Maya.
Together they watched the moon peek through Maya's window like a friendly neighbor stopping by to say hello. "Goodnight, moon," Maya whispered. Pebble blinked her big green eyes slowly, which is how kittens say I love you.
Maya curled around Pebble, and Pebble curled around Maya, until they were one perfect, warm circle of friend-and-kitten. Pebble purred a tiny secret right into Maya's ear:
"Thank you for being my Maya."
Maya smiled with her eyes already closed. "Goodnight, Pebble," she whispered back. "Thank you for being my Pebble."
And outside, the moon stayed at the window a little longer than usual — just to watch the two best friends in the whole world fall happily, softly, sweetly asleep.
